Saturday Bazaar

It’s the end of week three, only …. nope, not going to go there quite yet!  Work has been very quiet this past week (magnified by the fact that I’ve been on the night shift) but with Ramadan coming to an end soon, odds are things will get busier.  I’ve been keeping myself busy when I’m not working by running, drinking iced cappuccinos, watching the odd movie and playing golf on the PSP.  Today was a special day as it was my last night shift for a couple of weeks and also the weekly bazaar.

Every Saturday local merchants from Kandahar City set up shop in a secured area and try to make as much money as they can from all of us stuck here in KAF.  The bazaar was very similar to the souks that I visited in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, although there was a notable lack of luggage for sale.  But rest assured there was all the carpets, shisha pipes, pashminas, fake rolexes and pirated movies that your heart could desire.  Best of all, and this will be music to Nardine’s ears, I’ve finally found a replacement for my black panther blanket that mysteriously went missing!

There was also a lot of Afghan children running around trying to sell you everything from rattlesnake magnets to scorpions on a key chain.  The kids were short which kinda threw me off.  You’d see this kid who was probably 13-15 years old, sporting a scragly mustache, but in size looked like an eight year old.  Forgot to take some pictures of the kids, will get some next week.

So anyone want to guess what they are getting for Christmas this year??  Seriously though, if you see anything in the photos that looks interesting let me know and I’ll send it back for you.  Fake rolexes are only $5, what a bargain!  And now, for Nardine’s shopping pleasure, the pashminas:

Well done Cory – You have found a mall – Nardi and I will get John to babysit and we will be over next week to do what we do best. Amazes me that in the heart of the war zone one can still shop – but I guess life goes on for the Afganis and they need to make money somehow. You look good
    xx

Dude, I don’t really care what you bring back, just no more pipes or tobacco… my neighbors are starting to ask questions.
