Four weeks into our new city and we are still loving it. We spent an afternoon at the Museum of Natural History and although its currently undergoing renovations it’s still amazing, all five floors of it. But the first photo is the best. Can you see a family resemblance? Dylan calls this her ‘Molly’ look.
With our new bikes we went on a three hour ride along the Rideau Canal, stopping to watch the boats move through the locks. I was unaware of the history of the Canal, but after watching the boats I Google’d it. Just in case your historically challenged like me here is a tidbit on the Canal.
The Rideau Canal, opened in 1832, is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. The word rideau is French for curtain. This was the appearance of the twin falls of the Rideau River, where it meets the Ottawa River, to Samuel de Champlain who travelled up the Ottawa River in 1613. The name Rivière du Rideau first appeared on maps in about 1694.
The plan to construct a navigable waterway between Lake Ontario and the Ottawa River was conceived after the War of 1812 (you remember; the war where Canada beat back the invading Americans). It was designed to provide a secure supply route from Montréal to Kingston, avoiding the vulnerable St. Lawrence River route. Today we welcome the invading Americans to journey its scenic route. As you travel along the Rideau you will see most of the stonework and many of the buildings as they were in the 19th century.

And we found some ice cream along the way.
This past weekend we enjoyed a BBQ with our friends. For a short time Cory has some of his Military friends living near him. And Dylan and Jack get to play with Sebastien and Elio.

You guys are having way to much fun in Ottawa being new comers. And Dylan, I can’t tell which is you and which is Molly. Glad to hear that everything is coming along and that you are all settling in well…I see even Jack has made a friend. Take care…luv and miss you all…GB & GC…(Grandpa Bill & Grandma Cheryl)
What lovely pictures. I can certainly see the family resemblance with Dilly and Molly… I think Dad and I might like to charter a boat and do the canal thing. Load the bikes onboard and cycle around..Grandkids might like it….. Looks like you are having loads of fun in Ottawa. We look forward to you showing us around.
